The Badia a Coltibuono winery, one of the most representative of the Chianti Classico area, is based in Monti Chianti, in the extreme north of the Chianti sub-area of Gaiole. Built by the Vallombrosian monks in 1051 as a monastery and place of worship, the Badia a Coltibuono, literally 'abbey of the good harvest', experienced a great development under the patronage of Lorenzo de 'Medici that continued its benevolent effects until the Napoleonic requisitions. Sold then through a lottery and then purchased by a banker in 1846, the abbey was transformed into a farm after World War II by Piero Stucchi Prinetti and is now run by his children, the sixth generation of the family.
Centuries of production and transformation have led the company to reach today the size of 800 hectares, of which 53 are vineyards. The vineyards are managed with an organic approach that aims, through experiments and the use of only natural substances, to minimize the use of copper. The plants, supported with chestnut poles, are organically nourished by means of controlled grassing and organic fertilizers. The conversion to the organic regime, dating back to 1994, represented an absolute novelty for the production of Chianti and a courageous and pioneering choice.
The stylistic code of the entire production is recognizable by the extraordinary finesse and recalls the most intimate characteristics of Chianti. Established for some time on very high standards, the quality of the products is continually reinvigorated and increased by company modernizations and rearrangements that continually relaunch the bottles produced at the top of the entire Chianti production. Satisfying aromas, delicate and surprising aromas, record-breaking drinkability are just some of the characteristics of the fantastic interpretations of Chianti that bear the name of Badia a Coltibuono, a winery that thus perpetuates the name of the 'good harvest' and binds it inextricably to that of the great wine.
