Extended between the territories of the two provinces of Asti and Cuneo, as well as bordering two other equally important areas - such as that of Roero and Monferrato - the Langhe area has been included by Unesco in the list of the "Heritage of 'Humanity', but above all it should be considered as an undisputed point of reference for what concerns the highest Italian wine excellence. In this panorama, the Giacomo Conterno winery is one of the most exciting wineries of what is, precisely, the magical territory of the Langhe: each descendant of the Conterno family has placed a fundamental piece of history and prestige in this reality. which the company deservedly enjoys today worldwide.
It was the early 1900s, when Giacomo Conterno gave life to the winery, in the municipality of Monforte d'Alba. The son of historic winemakers in the area, Giacomo began making Barolo wine, which at the time was sold loose in demijohns. Subsequently, his son Giovanni was the true precursor of the times: through the selection of grapes from local suppliers, in 1912 he bottled Barolo for the first time. The other son, Aldo, will instead undertake an independent path that will lead him to the birth of the Poderi Aldo Conterno company, in the Bussia area of ​​Monforte. Giovanni's son, Giacomo, in '24 produced the Riserva Monfortino for the first time and in '74 bought the company's first vineyard: the cru "Francia", in Serralunga d'Alba, the most suitable area for Barolo together. to that of Monforte.
From that moment Giacomo Conterno will no longer purchase grapes from local growers, but will devote himself exclusively to the work of its own vineyards. Today the winery is managed by Roberto Conterno, who took over in 1988. Roberto, in addition to working with the same rigor and with the same respect for the tradition of his ancestors, has carried out a work of expansion and enhancement of the company, purchasing three hectares of the cru "Cerretta" and in 2015 the cru adjacent to France, "Arione", also particularly suited for the production of nebbiolo and barbera.
In short, a story that has not yet come to an end, and which indeed continues in the name of the highest Italian wine excellence and beyond.
