The cellar of the Marchesi de ’Frescobaldi is one of the most historic, important and well-known oenological realities not only in Italy but in the whole world: a monument of extraordinary importance in Tuscan wine history. The Frescobaldi family, perhaps originally from the Val di Pesa, settled in Florence in the thirteenth century, managing in a short time to reach a position of economic, political and cultural prestige. The main activities that made it extraordinarily rich and influential were the wool trade, the bank loan and the cultivation of vast land properties, in which large quantities of wine and oil were produced. Popes and kings from all over Europe, to whom the family often lent large sums of money, were the first customers and admirers of wine production. For centuries the family maintained a prominent position in the city affairs and continued to produce typical local wines, mainly based on Sangiovese. Starting in 1855 Vittorio degli Albizzi, an acquired member of the important family, introduced the cultivation of international vines such as Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, giving a significant turning point in production and inaugurating that modern and innovative style that still characterizes the activity .

The Frescobaldi winery remains today, centuries later, one of the largest and most popular wine producers in Tuscany and Italy, with a total of 1200 hectares of vineyards located in prestigious estates with historic houses and ancient castles. These estates enclose all the glorious history of the greatest Tuscan wines. Just to give some examples: Castello di Nipozzano, where important expressions of Chianti Classico are born; Castello Pomino, home of elegant and intense wines with ancient charm and Tenuta Castelgiocondo in Montalcino, which seems to enclose the magic and all the history of the Sienese territory.
