The Ancient Cellars of the Marquises of Barolo are based in Barolo, in the building facing the Castle of the Marquises Falletti. Right here, more than 200 years ago, a beautiful story began. The story of a winery, protected by rolling hills in the heart of the Langhe, where a wine was born which was then called Barolo in honor of the birthplace. No one then could have imagined that this wine would one day become king: the King of wines, the wine of the Kings. The story begins, more precisely, in 1807 when the Marquis of Barolo, Carlo Tancredi Falletti, marries in Paris a French noblewoman, Juliette Colbert of Maulévrier, great-grandson of the famous finance minister of the Sun King. It was Juliette who understood the great potential of the wine produced in Barolo which, only after complete fermentation and prolonged aging in wood, could reveal all the qualities typical of the soil and grape variety. The Nebbiolo, powerful and austere, able to last over time and to express all the characteristics of this extraordinary terroir. In 1864, with Juliette's death, the prestigious Falletti dynasty died out: to perpetuate their memory and beneficial activity, the Opera Pia Barolo was created by the will of the Marquise. This story was destined to cross with that of another Barolo family: the Abbona family who had founded their own cellar "Cavalier Felice Abbona e Figli" at the foot of the Castello dei Marchesi. In those years, in fact, Pietro Abbona was born who, operating with tenacity and competence in his father's cellars, together with his brother Ernesto and his sisters Marina and Celestina, managed to buy in 1929 the Agency of the Tenuta Opera Pia Barolo, or the ancient cellars of vinification and aging of the Marquises of Barolo. Today, the Abbona family continues the work started more than two centuries ago: producing high quality wines, destined to enrich, year after year, the history of a large cellar where current events and tradition meet and where it is handed down, as a father in his son, an important patrimony of vineyards, cellars and knowledge for more than five generations. Thanks to a great, now historical, human experience, Anna and Ernesto Abbona, together with their children Valentina and Davide, act as faithful interpreters of the diversity of the native places and vines, respecting and rigorously preserving their typicality thanks to the vinification of the grapes coming from their own vineyards and from contributing viticulturists selected over many years of activity, privileging the location and cultivation capacity of the individual vineyards.
