Discovering the Wines of Gorgona

Discovering the Wines of Gorgona

Have you ever seen this bottle?

The Gorgona Bianco and the Gorgona Rosso are two particular wines of the Marchesi de Frescobaldi company.

These wines come from the island of Gorgona, the smallest of the Tuscan Archipelago 20 miles west of Livorno. The Gorgona project was born in August 2012 thanks to the collaboration between Frescobaldi and Gorgona, the only penitentiary island in Europe. Here the inmates spend their last sentence, working in contact with nature to develop skills that facilitate their reintegration into work and society.

Gorgona Bianco 2019, attractive and wild at the same time, stands out for a deep and bright straw yellow color, with brilliant golden reflections. His is a complex and ample bouquet but never intrusive. Notes of white pulp fruit open the dance; immediately followed by the sensual and enveloping aromatic herbs typical of the island such as rosemary and helichrysum. The presence of the sea, in addition to enhancing the aromatic component, gives the wine a marked minerality and freshness. The balance between acidity and flavor is incredibly harmonious, as is the soft and enveloping entrance. The finish is persistent but always with a persuasive elegance.

The Gorgona Rosso wine comes from a small portion of a vineyard of about 1000 square meters, located in the only area sheltered from strong sea winds, in the heart of an amphitheater overlooking the sea. The vineyard is managed in organic cultivation by the prison inmates, for an extremely limited production of bottles. From a natural amphitheater close to the sea, Gorgona wine collects the characteristics that make it unique. Intense ruby red with shades tending to garnet. On the nose, the aromas of small fruits of the undergrowth alternate with more structured hints of roasting and sweet spices, all in perfect harmony with a decisive but not excessive ethereal note. On the palate, the good acidity frames elegant well-structured tannins that make the wine round and pleasant, sometimes angular, the result of a reflective wine in continuous evolution.
